The Alberta curriculum asks us to teach from conceptual understanding to procedural knowledge.

What does that look & sound like in Grades 5 & 6?

There’s number sense and number facts and we have to study, teach and assess both. With the 3 R’s in mind, this 2 day series will help you determine:

What to teach, in what sequence and for how long? What to Test. how to test it and when to decide to move on.

The focus is number skills and number sense (with specific attention to multiplication, division & decimals),  but math is also measurement, shape and space. The tasks we engage with will connect all three.

Key Questions specific to your grade level:

  •       What facts are students  just ‘supposed to know’, when are they supposed to know them?
  •       What if they don’t know them?  What interventions actually work?
  •       What does it look like when students can Reason and Problem Solve at grade level?
  •       What does teaching for RECALL look, sound and feel like?
  •       At the end of the year, what should every Grade 5 & 6 student know and show?
